U.S. healthcare spending grew 7.2% in 2024, reaching $5.3 trillion, or $15,474 per person.
As a share of GDP, health spending hit 18.0%. That’s roughly one dollar out of every five and a half that the American economy produces.
In the most recent comparable OECD data, the United States outspent all other member countries by a wide margin. That level of spending was two-and-a-half times the OECD average and 55% higher than Switzerland, the next biggest spending country.
If spending bought proportional results, Americans would be the healthiest population in the developed world. They’re not.

Life expectancy at birth in the U.S. reached 79.0 years in 2024, its highest-ever level. But the average life expectancy in comparable countries was 82.7 years, about 3.7 years longer, reflecting a persistently wide gap. That gap is measured by Peterson-KFF Health System Tracker using 2024 data.
Healthcare spending growth continued to outpace overall economic growth in 2024, and the healthcare share of the economy increased from 17.7% in 2023 to 18.0% in 2024.
CMS projects that over 2025 to 2034, average health spending growth of 5.4% will outpace GDP growth of 4.1%, pushing the health spending share to 20.6% of GDP by 2034.
The trajectory is clear. More spending, no proportional improvement, and a growing number of Americans who can’t afford the care they need on American soil.

The average annual premiums for employer-sponsored health insurance in 2025 are $9,325 for single coverage and $26,993 for family coverage.
It’s the first time in two decades that the cost of covering a family of four has risen by 6% or more for three consecutive years.
KFF President and CEO Drew Altman warned that “with GLP-1s, increases in hospital prices, tariffs and other factors, we expect employer premiums to rise more sharply next year.”
For the 154 million Americans covered by employer plans, these aren’t abstract numbers. They’re visible on every paycheck. And for every person whose deductible is too high to use their own insurance for dental work or an elective procedure, the math starts pointing somewhere else.

I’m going to walk through real pricing across MedEscape’s four treatment categories. These are 2026 figures from board-certified providers in Mexico, Costa Rica, and Panama.
Dental
A single titanium dental implant in Mexico costs about $790. With the abutment and crown, the total comes to around $1,500. In the U.S., the same ranges from $3,000 to $5,000.
All-on-4 dental implant packages in Mexico run $8,990 to $15,000.
In the U.S., this procedure averages $30,000. That’s a 50-70% savings for the same Straumann or Nobel Biocare hardware.
Fertility
The average cost of IVF in Mexico ranges from $4,500 to $8,000 per cycle, significantly lower than the $15,000 to $25,000 typically charged in the United States.
In Costa Rica, a standard IVF cycle typically costs between $6,000 and $8,500. In the United States, the same procedure averages $20,000 to $25,000.
Most American insurance plans still don’t cover IVF. When you’re facing two or three cycles out of pocket, the difference between $8,000 and $22,000 per cycle is the difference between trying again and stopping.
Hair restoration
Hair transplant in Mexico typically costs from $3,000 to $4,100. The final price depends on technique, graft count, and clinic location. Patients save around 72% compared to the U.S., where the average cost is $12,500.
According to the ISHRS 2025 Practice Census, 95% of first-time hair restoration surgery patients in 2024 were between the ages of 20 and 35. That demographic skews younger and more cost-sensitive than almost any other surgical population.
Aesthetic medicine
Procedures like rhinoplasty, facelifts, and body contouring follow the same cost pattern. Board-certified surgeons in Mexico and Costa Rica perform these at 40-60% below U.S. pricing, using the same devices and materials that American practices use.
Why care abroad costs less
Why the price gap exists (and why it’s not about quality)
The U.S. pricing problem isn’t one of skill. It’s structural. Inflated physician salaries, higher pharmaceutical spending per capita, and substantial administrative costs all contribute. The high expenditure is not due to increased utilization but primarily stems from higher prices for services and products. That’s Statista’s analysis of OECD data.
Providers in Mexico, Costa Rica, and Panama pay less for malpractice coverage. Their administrative overhead is a fraction of a U.S. hospital’s. And many of these clinics were built from the ground up to serve international patients, with English-speaking staff, U.S.-compatible lab protocols, and digital imaging that matches or exceeds what you’d find in a mid-market American city.
