Merida
Mérida is the capital of Yucatán and the largest city on the Yucatán Peninsula. It has pastel colonial streets, shaded plazas and 16th-century churches, with Maya ruins and cenotes a short drive away. It’s also one of the calmer places in Mexico to have treatment. In INEGI’s March 2026 urban safety survey, 33.7 percent of Mérida residents said they felt unsafe in their city, compared with 61.5 percent nationally.
Getting there is easy. Mérida International Airport handled almost 4 million passengers in 2025, and there are nonstop flights from Houston, Dallas and Miami. Each takes about two hours. From the moment you land, the pace is slower than Cancún or Mexico City. That makes a real difference when you’re recovering.
The city has twice been named American Capital of Culture, in 2000 and again in 2017. Evenings in the centro bring live music in the plazas, and Yucatecan food, starting with cochinita pibil, is a reason to come on its own. Once your doctor clears you, Uxmal is about 80 km away and Chichén Itzá about 125 km. Both are easy day trips.
Mérida gives you specialist care in a city you’ll actually want to stay in.
